Deep Conditioning 101

Deep Conditioning 101

Winter is the perfect time to step up your deep conditioning services. While conditioners are only a temporary fix and cannot improve the quality of new hair growth, deep conditioning can restore the hair’s strength, increase porosity & elasticity, infuse moisture, add luster & protect hair against possible breakage. Encourage your clients to deep condition monthly especially in the winter & summer months to help with environmental and chemical damage. Hair that is deep conditioned regularly is more manageable, silkier and less prone to damage.

Five simple steps for perfect results:
1. Shampoo –
It is not enough to simply rinse the hair. It is important to remove any product and open the hair cuticle for better penetration. Use a clarifying demineralizing shampoo which removes old product buildup, chemicals, minerals & free metals.

2. Hair Mask –
Choose a protein conditioner designed to penetrate the cortex & strengthen the hair shaft.

3. Applying the Product –
Since the ends are prone to the most damage, this is where you should begin to apply your conditioner. Starting at the ends gives them additional time to absorb the conditioner. Finger comb the conditioner through the rest of the hair assuring that each strand is covered.

4. Heat is Key –
Some conditioners require a heat or steam application. Heat is used to lift the cuticle so that the deep conditioner can penetrate the hair shaft. As addressed in Milady Standard Natural Hair Care & Braiding, “Heat helps break down the protein molecule & allows it to pass through the cuticle of the hair & directly into the cortex.”

Simply place a hot towel wrap over your client’s head or use a plastic cap and put them under a medium heat dryer for 20-30 minutes. “After 30 minutes from the initial application, there are no more increases in conditioner absorbing to hair. The reason for this is that the hair conditioner simply has no more places on the hair where it can stick to…all gaps which it can plug & surfaces where it can attach are occupied.” Source

5. Rinse –
Rinse the product out completely with cool water before styling.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Volumize Fine Hair

Volumize Fine Hair

Styling thin hair can be tricky. If you desire thick luscious hair but suffer with fine limp hair, here are some helpful hints to create the illusion of having a thicker, fuller mane.

1 – Wash More Often
The minute your hair gets a little oily it will weigh it down. Wash your hair more often just don’t go overboard. Washing too often can strip your hair and increase oil production. Fine-hair ladies should wash every other day using a dry shampoo the second day if needed. Start with a volumizing shampoo; it will cleanse your hair without adding any weight.

2 – Condition Ends
Avoid applying conditioner to your roots. If your hair needs a conditioner, apply it mid-length to the end avoiding the scalp area. You do not want to weigh your hair down so condition your hair sparingly.

3 – Use a Styling Aid
Choose a styling aid which includes Panthenol. Panthenol thickens each strand of hair adding shine and texture while reducing split ends. Find a hair gel or foam specifically formulated for fine hair and contains Sage, Nettle, Rosemary & Aloe to keep the hair pliable & conditioned without adding weight.

4 – Drying Techniques
Use tried & true methods to add volume when drying your hair. As you blow-dry your hair, scrunch with your hand until it’s at least 60% dry, then finish styling with a brush. You can also blow-dry your hair upside down. If you part your hair, blow dry it in the opposite direction (example: left part, blow dry right side of your hair towards the left).

5 – Hold That Style –
Now that you have the style you’re after, keep it in place with a quick spritz of hair spray.

6- Second Day Blues –
A dry shampoo can be your best friend! It’s a quick and easy way to eliminate unwanted oil. Try to look for a spray-on residue free version for easy application. Simply, part your hair and spray onto your roots, give it a few minutes to absorb the excess oil, finger toss it then spray all over your hair to add some extra volume. There are plenty of powder versions as well. If you are up for the challenge, you can make your own.  Whatever type you choose, your hair and scalp will feel clean and refreshed!
